Role Description
KEY TASKS • Care for a dog in training or awaiting placement during weeknights and weekends • Provide a safe, calm, and loving environment for rest and sleep • Follow trainer/instructor guidance on obedience, social behaviour, handling training, transport, and general care • Manage toileting, feeding, walking, and hygiene needs • Represent Seeing Eye Dogs professionally and manage public interactions appropriately • Transport the dog for urgent care in emergencies • Report any health or behaviour concerns to Seeing Eye Dogs staff • Notify your trainer if you are injured or unable to care for the dog (note; a medical clearance may be required to resume) IMPORTANT Acknowledging that:- • Dogs must not be left alone for more than three hours • Walking two dogs at once is not allowed. • Keep play areas tidy to avoid tripping hazards • Maintain awareness of surroundings and manage other dog interactions appropriately • The Instuctor team may consult Client Services for blindness or low vision advice is needed to support the dog and volunteer. • Have not been convicted of animal cruelty in Australia or elsewhere
Skills and Attributes
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE • Able to be patient, dedicated, and flexible • Able to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision • Enjoy working with dogs • Strong interpersonal and communication skills • Strong written and spoken English DESIRABLE SKILLS (not essential) • Awareness of working with people who are blind or have low vision
Training
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS • Online volunteer training • Dog handling skills check • Role specific – face-to-face which will compliment the Puppy Caring manual and resources provided
Other Requirements
LOCATION & TIME REQUIREMENTS For Dogs in formal training (12–18 months old) Carers live or work within close proximity of Seeing Eye Dogs in Kensington, VIC. • Drop-off: 7am–8.30am, Monday to Friday (or as required) • Pick-up: 3pm –7pm, Monday to Friday (or as required) Dogs awaiting client placement • These placements range from a few weeks to a few months • Dogs remain at home, unless requested to attend the Kensington site • Carers must follow all training and socialisation guidelines, as per Puppy Caring Program requirements Mornington Peninsula, Ivanhoe, Kew (Victoria) / New South Wales and Queensland • A trainer will collect and return the dog to/from your home at agreed times, Monday to Friday (or as required) VOLUNTEER PAPERWORK Complete necessary compliance checks such as but not limited to: - • carer agreement and role description • up-to-date volunteer checks (e.g., Working with Children, police checks) • obtain employer/building management and landlord approvals, if applicable. • external risk assessment, home inspection, and interview • hold a valid driver’s license and have immediate access to a private car (no public/shared transport).
